Hollywood and Mormonism

Hitchcock and the Book of Mormon

Did you know...? The longest quotation from Latter-day scripture in any major film is not in an LDS production. (It may even be the longest continuous quotation from any scripture)

Alfred Hitchcock's last film was called "The Family Plot" (released in 1976). At one point there is a graveside scene, and the camera pans around, while we can hear the minister's sermon in the background. He is quoting from the Book of Mormon! If you listen carefully, he quotes 2 Nephi 9:20-27 - that is a full 8 consecutive verses! (The last five verses get quieter as the camera moves away.)

Star Wars: the Mormon connection? :-)

There are plenty of films and shows with LDS parallels or links (Battlestar Galactica, The Incredible Hulk and Hercules come to mind), but probably the most famous is Star Wars. It is probably just a coincidence, but many people have commented on how Yoda looks just like President Kimball (Church President when "Empire Strikes Back" came out), and how "the force" parallels the LDS concept of spirit (note that the force is not God, it is the power by which the Jedi priesthood acts) and other parallels. With the release of "The Phantom menace" the coincidences just pile up. For example, did you notice the "temple" at Naboo (Nauvoo?) and the council of twelve led by a presidency of three, and... well, if you know any more Star Wars or other Hollywod trivia like this, I may just devote a whole page to the subject...
