As people and animals were screeching in agony while being burned to death, the observers would dress in costumes made of animal skins and heads. There is no question that, in the words of anthropologist Sir James Frazer, Halloween has a "purely pagan origin." He notes that under "a thin Christian cloak," the Feast of All Souls "conceals an ancient pagan festival of the dead." This festival can be traced through thousands of years and be seen in nearly every culture since Babel. The origin of Halloween is the Celtic festival (Fountainheads of wicca) of Samhain, (Halloween) lord of death and evil spirits. I also realize that some of these names mention deaths to be related to aids, cancer, automobile accidents, etc. However being on your death-bed puts you in the hospital or under someone else's care for a short while. Easy enough for someone to replace needed medicine with something deadly. Most of these names died in Los Angeles county California. One or two every year on Halloween. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that something sinister is happening in Hollywood. Fame and fortune really does have its price.  Who will be the next candidates for this year? El origen de las calabazas de Halloween

El origen de las famosas calabazas talladas deviene de una leyenda de origen celta (a caballo entre Irlanda y Escocia) sobre Jack "El Tacaño" (Stingy Jack en el original inglés), un granjero que engañaba y mentía a vecinos y amigos. Esta conducta le granjeó toda clase de enemistades pero también una reputación de persona tan malvada que rivalizaría con el mismísimo Satanás. 

El Diablo, a quien llegó el rumor de tan negra alma, acudió a comprobar si efectivamente era un rival de semejante calibre. Disfrazado como un hombre normal acudió al pueblo de éste y se puso a beber con él durante largas horas, revelando su identidad tras ver que en efecto era un auténtico malvado. Cuando Lucifer le dijo que venía a llevárselo para pagar por sus pecados, Jack le pidió una ronda más juntos como última voluntad. El Diablo se lo concedió pero al ir a pagar ninguno de los dos tenía dinero, así que Jack retó a Lucifer a convertirse en una moneda para pagar la ronda y demostrar sus poderes. Satanás lo hizo, pero en lugar de pagar con la moneda Jack la metió en su bolsillo, donde llevaba un crucifijo de plata. Incapaz de salir de allí el Diablo ordenó al granjero que le dejara libre, pero Jack no lo haría a menos que prometiera volver al infierno para no molestarle durante un año.

Transcurrido ese tiempo, el Diablo apareció de nuevo en casa de Jack para llevárselo al inframundo pero de nuevo Jack pidió un último deseo, en este caso que el Diablo cogiera una manzana situada en lo alto de un árbol para así tener su última comida antes de su tormento. Lucifer accedió, pero cuando estaba en el árbol Jack talló una cruz en su tronco para que no pudiera escapar. En esta ocasión Jack le pidió no ser molestado en diez años, además de otra condición: que nunca pudiera reclamar su alma para el inframundo. Satanás accedió y Jack se vio libre de su amenaza. 

Su destino no fue mejor: tras morir (mucho antes de esos diez años pactados), Jack se preparaba para ir al cielo pero fue detenido en las puertas de San Pedro, impidiéndosele el paso pues no podían aceptarle por su mala vida pasada, siendo enviado al Infierno. Para su desgracia allí tampoco podían aceptarlo debido al trato que había realizado con el Diablo, y éste le expulsó de su reino y le condenó a deambular por los caminos con un nabo hueco con un carbón ardiendo dentro como única luz que guiara su eterno vagar entre los reinos del bien y del mal. Con el paso del tiempo Jack el Tacaño fue conocido como Jack el de la Linterna o "Jack of the Lantern", nombre que se abrevió al definitivo "Jack O'Lantern". 

Esta es la razón de usar nabos (y más tarde calabazas, al ser más grandes y fáciles de tallar) para alumbrar el camino a los difuntos en Halloween, y también el motivo de decorar las casas con estas figuras horrendas (para evitar que Jack llamara a la puerta de las casas y proponer Truco o trato).

Historia de Halloween

Halloween es una fiesta de la cultura anglosajona que se celebra en la noche del día 31 de octubre. 

Sus orígenes se remontan a los celtas, hace más de 2.500 años, cuando el año celta terminaba al final del verano, el día 31 de octubre de nuestro calendario (Samhain). El ganado era llevado de los prados a los establos para el invierno. Ese último día, se suponía que los espíritus podían salir de los cementerios y apoderarse de los cuerpos de los vivos para resucitar, pedirles alimentos y maldecirles. Les hacían víctimas de conjuros si no accedían a sus peticiones: me das algo o te hago una travesura, que es la traducción de "Trick or Treat" (Truco o Trato).

Para evitarlo, los poblados celtas ensuciaban las casas y las "decoraban" con huesos, calaveras y demás cosas desagradables, de forma que los muertos pasaran de largo asustados. De ahí viene la tradición de decorar con motivos siniestros las casas en la actual víspera de todos los santos y también los disfraces. Es así pues una fiesta asociada a la venida de los dioses paganos a la vida. 

La iglesia de Roma decidió convertir la festividad al catolicismo. Se instituyó el 1 de noviembre como el Día de Todos los Santos, que en Inglaterra se denominó "All Hallows' Day", y la noche anterior "All Hallows' Eve" que posteriormente derivó en "Halloween".

La fiesta fue exportada a los Estados Unidos por emigrantes europeos en el siglo XIX, hacia 1846. Sin embargo no comenzó a celebrarse masivamente hasta 1921. Ese año se celebró el primer desfile de Halloween en Minnesota y luego le siguieron otros estados. La internacionalización de Halloween se produjo a finales de los años 70 y principios de los 80 gracias al cine y a las series de televisión.

Siempre que se indague acerca del ocultismo del siglo XX, ya sea en investigaciones de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, de la iglesia de Satán instituida por Anton Lavey o de la Golden Dawn, siempre se tendrá que recurrir en algún punto al nombre de Aleister Crowley, quien fue llamado por los diarios sensacionalistas ingleses y por su madre "El Hombre más malvado del mundo", y aunque en muchos textos lo catalogan como simple escritor y poeta radical dejando de lado sus actividades dentro de la magia, su drogadicción y su bisexualidad, la realidad es que la forma en que este personaje escribió su nombre en los libros de historia es bastante singular.

Edward Alexander Crowley nació el 12 de Octubre de 1875 en Leamington Warwickshire, Inglaterra. Hijo de un rico cervecero galés, a corta edad quedó huérfano y heredero de una vasta fortuna. Como consecuencia de esto fue criado por dos tías solteras en un ambiente extremadamente puritano y severo ya que pertenecían, al igual que sus padres, a Los Hermanos Plymouth, una secta evangélica, conservadora y puritana.

Estudió en Cambridge, pero nunca llegó a graduarse, sin embargo pudo sentirse libre por primera vez en su vida y comenzó su tarea de escritor y poeta. Se dice que también fue ahí donde Aleister Crowley comenzó a rebelarse y se declaró enemigo acérrimo de la iglesia cristiana anteponiendo la magia como un mejor medio de alcanzar la realización espiritual. Además expresó su odio hacia sus padres, a los que siempre quiso hacer daño, por lo que no es de extrañar que su propia madre le llegara a llamar "La Bestia".

El interés de Crowley por lo oculto comenzó al leer al autor Carl Von Eckartshausen, cuyo libro "La nube sobre el Santuario" lo impactó notablemente, al hablar de una supuesta hermandad de adeptos que trabajan por el bienestar de la humanidad.

Crowley llamó Iluminismo Científico al sistema que desarrolló para la A.A. (Astrum Argentum) y cuyo lema es "El método de la Ciencia, el objetivo de la Religión", en el cual según él "(si se interpreta correctamente) está expresado todo". Para difundir su mensaje publicó una serie de revistas llamada "El Equinoccio"..

Sugirió a Winston Churchill que usara el signo de la victoria (el famoso "thumbs up" o pulgar hacia arriba) afirmando que le haría ganar la guerra. Asimismo, publicó un pequeño panfleto que contiene poemas relacionados con el tema, titulado "Thumbs Up: A Pentagram - a Pentacle to win the war" para que también lo usaran los soldados.

Dentro de las asociaciones ocultistas a las que perteneció Aleister Crowley se cuenta la Golden Dawn, donde después de escalar rápidamente los niveles inferiores tuvo altercados con otros miembros de la misma orden. Es en la Golden Dawn donde Crowley comienza a practicar los rituales mágicos guiado por una traducción de Samuel Liddel Matters de un manuscrito del siglo XV, llamado "El Libro de la Magia Sagrada de Abra Melin el Mago".

Aleister Crowley fue rápidamente expulsado de la Golden Dawn y fundó después la A.A.(Astrum Argentum) llegando también a ser personaje importante de la OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis) así como de otras muchas sociedades ocultistas.

Se retiró a Escocia, donde compró una casa a orillas del lago Ness a la que llamó Palacio de Boleskine y de acuerdo a la tradición escocesa se hizo llamar "Laird" (terrateniente) de Boleskine y Abertarff. Años más tarde Jimmy Page del grupo Led Zeppelin compraría la misma casa en que habitó Aleister Crowley.

A Crowley le gustaba cambiarse el nombre contínuamente, y por ello a lo largo de su vida fue conocido con sobrenombres como La bestia 666, Master Therion, Perdurabo (El que permanecerá), Conde Vladimir Svareff, Príncipe Chioa Khan, Baphomet, Lord Boleskine, etc.

En cuanto a las acusaciones en su contra de practicar la magia negra y la misa negra, Aleister Crowley dijo en una declaración al diario inglés "London Sunday Dispatch" lo siguiente:

Para practicar magia negra tienes que violar todo principio de la ciencia, decencia, e inteligencia. Debes estar obsesionado con una idea demente de la importancia del mezquino objeto de tus detestables y egoístas deseos. Se me ha acusado de ser "mago negro". No se ha hecho jamás afirmación más tonta sobre mí" ...

No obstante, también se sabe que la personalidad de Aleister Crowley era la de un tipo muy hablador e irresponsable, que en ocasiones decía cosas por decirlas sin tomárselas demasiado en serio, lo cual se observa en su comportamiento en ocasiones contradictorio, como cuando durante la Primera Guerra Mundial decía estar de parte de los alemanes mientras que durante la Segunda se mostraba abiertamente a favor de Inglaterra.

Aleister no sólo dedicó su vida al estudio, práctica y divulgación de la magia, sino que también se dedicó a muchas otras actividades que podía desempeñar gracias a la fortuna que le habían dejado sus padres. Era un jugador experto de ajedrez y practicaba también el alpinismo llegando incluso a participar en expediciones pioneras en su tiempo, como la expedición liderada por Oscar Eckenstein al segundo pico más alto del mundo después del Everest: el K2, en la india, con 8611 metros de altura. Si bien la expedición en la que participó no alcanzó la cima, sí se considera como el primer intento serio de alcanzarla llegando a una altura aproximada entre 6600 y 6705 metros de altura, sin tanques de oxígeno. También se dice que practicaba el ciclismo y el piragüismo entre otras disciplinas deportivas, además de ser un viajero que recorrió el mundo residiendo en varios países.

Además de escribir textos oculstistas también fue novelista, poeta y ensayista con más de 80 libros escritos, la mayoría de ellos sobre magia, cábala y esoterismo.

Al final de su vida, Aleister Crowley estaba en bancarrota. Murió en una casa de huéspedes en Inglaterra, el 1 de Diciembre de 1947, atacado por el asma que padeció durante gran parte de su vida y que se intensificó en sus últimos años. Sus últimas palabras antes de morir fueron: "A veces me odio a mí mismo".

Witchcraft is very real but greatly misunderstood. I know because witchcraft goes back on the paternal side of my family for over five generations to Chesterfield, Massachusetts in 1770.

My great grandmother became a well-known witch in Wisconsin in the early days of this century. Caroline was a blind witch and used her fingers to read palms and also became adept at putting “the hex” on people.

Many spooky things would happen in our family. Dishes would slide off from shelves, light bulbs would unscrew and fall to the floor, filmy apparitions would appear and vanish, and this sort of thing became a way of life.

In one instance, my father was riding with my grandfather in a horse-drawn wagon, when a filmy white apparition appeared in front of the horse, causing the horse to rear up on its hind legs. Surrounded by electrifying fear, my grandfather cracked the whip and the wagon lurched forward and on its way.

My father also watched in stunned amazement when, on another occasion, an unhitched wagon loaded with hay went up a steep hill by itself.

Halloween was a special time for me, as I was growing up in Clintonville, Wisconsin. I had given my heart and soul to that day called “Samhain” (pronounced Sow-en). I had learned that the pagan Sabot of Samhain was a time when the barrier between the mundane and astral planes was very thin and departed spirits easily crossed over.’

I also learned that the Roman Catholic Church copied and re-named all of the eight sabbots. Not only had Samhain become Halloween, but the Winter Solstice became Christmas, Imbolg became Candlemass, Beltaine became May Day, and Lughnasadh became Lammas.

The vernal equinox was celebrated as Easter, which is always the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.

Halloween was my special time, when I felt drawn to become like my great grandmother. I wasn’t interested in the silliness of the Catholic Halloween. I wanted real magic. The so-called “Christians” were cursing themselves and their children by copying the craft that their tenets forbade. I knew full well that so-called Christians were copying what my spiritual ancestors had done for many centuries.

The powerful witches, known as Grand Druids or men of the oaks, that lived in the ancient British Isles gathered at Stonehedge on October 31st. These ancient witches practiced human sacrifice, hollowed out pumpkins and turnips, carving faces in them, and then used candles made from human tallow to illuminate them.

The druids played games such as bobbing for apples, as they floated in a tub of October ale. The druids also practiced ritual sex known as the “Great Rite”, as the fires blazed forth in the darkness of the giant stone monoliths of Stonehenge near Salisbury, England.

The apple was thought to be sacred, because when cut in half cross-wise, the core would reveal the Pentacle or five pointed star. The five points of this star represented Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Spirit.

When I was 13 years old, I began to invite the spirits of my deceased great grandmother into myself. Soon I began to acquire powers and became an adept astrologer and palm reader. I also practiced numerology and was becoming a very powerful witch. Many people followed me — and the advice that I gave them. I had achieved a great measure of success.

By the time I was 19, I had reached my first goal. I was a powerful witch. Then, very suddenly, the realization hit me that I was making predictions without looking at my charts. I would blurt out predictions in minute detail, and they would come to pass. I became frightfully aware that I had become a sending station and was dispatching spirits to make my predictions come true. I predicted accidents and tragedies, and suddenly I became filled with overwhelming fear.

I did not know it at the time, but a dear old woman had been praying for me every day for a long time. She had known my grandparents, and God used her to pray me out of darkness. I was completely disabled by fear, which God, in His mercy, allowed to come upon me.

A friend that I knew in high school persuaded me to come to church with him. It was a small apostolic church. I soon found myself on my knees repenting, as I had now found a power far greater than all witchcraft. One week later I was baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ. The next week I was baptized in the Holy Ghost.

I felt fifty pounds lighter, as many evil spirits fled from me as I yielded myself completely to my newfound friend, the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Now I have no fear and am a true minister of the Gospel.
