[disinfo ed.'s note: The following is the prologue to Area 51 - Black Jets: A History of the Aircraft Developed at Groom Lake, America's Secret Aviation Base by Bill Yenne.]
In the cartography of our lives, our dreams, and our popular culture, certain landmarks are embodied with great meaning that transcends their identity as mere places. We travel to certain ones to see things of great cultural or historical importance. Whether we are fond of Michelangelo or Picasso, or of Winslow Homer or Warhol, we go to great museums to view and marvel at celebrated works of art. We go to the Smithsonian to see the tangible artifacts of American history, from the Star Spangled Banner to the Spirit of St. Louis.
Meanwhile, we visit other iconic places, such as Waikiki or Las Vegas or any numbers of Disney Worlds or Lands or their analogues with other themes, for specific genres of “fun.”
And finally, there are places we visit not for specific artifacts or specific amusements but for the intangible reason that we just want to be there or, arguably more importantly, to say that we have been there.
We go to such places to breathe a certain rarified air.
We go to such places—Times Square or the corner of Haight and Ashbury—not so much to see and touch specific things, but to stand there and sense an ethereal yet palpable energy or to soak up the vibe.
This genre of venues possesses an importance that is greater than the sum of its parts. Merely the mention of one word, such as “Sturgis” or “Graceland,” speaks volumes to those who venerate these places for what they represent. Of course, none of these places is for everyone, and that is what makes each of them so important and so special to those for whom they do resonate. For such people, even those who have never been to these places that are the nexus of their fascination, the mere mention of the name is like a mantra that is a key to unlock an emotion.
Area 51 is such a place.
Even though Area 51 devotees cannot actually go there and stand in the gravel and fine desert dust of its epicenter, they come by the thousands every year to look at the mountains beyond which lies their field of dreams. The fact that armed guards prevent them from completing their pilgrimage only adds to the rush of excitement and the belief that this place is truly special.
In the 1980s, when the term “Area 51” entered the lexicon of popular culture, it was one of those legendary but not quite mythic places like Atlantis or Shangri-La or El Dorado. There are those who vociferously believe that these places truly exist while readily admitting that their precise locations are a bit vague. In turn, the ambiguity and obscurity add to an excitement that is kept alive by the conspiracy theories woven by and for the true believers.
What is especially curious and paradoxical about this forbidden land called Area 51 is that it lies so close to Las Vegas, Nevada. In the cartography of our lives, our dreams, and our popular culture, few places are more visited—or more insistent upon being visited— than Las Vegas.
The man who did more than any other to catapult the idea of an area numbered 51 into the public consciousness was a self-described engineer named Bob Lazar. In the late 1980s, he went to the media, specifically to George Knapp at KLAS television in Las Vegas, with his vivid stories of having worked at Sector 4 (S-4) of Area 51, where he had seen evidence that the US government possessed and was studying otherworldly spacecraft and their extraterrestrial crewmen. There was even a suggestion that the US Air Force was testing the alien spacecraft in their desert hideout.
Lazar was taken seriously—even welcomed and embraced—by those who had long believed not only in the existence of such craft and green or gray beings, but also in a thoroughly institutionalized government cover-up dating back to at least the 1950s. Lazar’s detractors, meanwhile, cite a lack of concrete evidence and the fact that no record of him exists at his claimed alma maters, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Nevertheless, Lazar helped create and shape a popular mythology that spawned numerous books, movies, and magazine articles, especially during the 1990s. For instance, the idea of a government conspiracy that keep extraterrestrial beings secret from the public was the catalyst for the popular television series X-Files, which aired for nine seasons beginning in 1993. The Area 51 conspiracy theory also became a staple of Art Bell’s popular late-night radio show Coast to Coast AM, which reached fifteen million listeners during its heyday in the late 1990s. Then too, Las Vegas’s minor league baseball team, the Las Vegas Stars, renamed itself as the Las Vegas 51s and adopted a cartoon extraterrestrial as their mascot and logo.
Whatever one may say about Bob Lazar and his legacy, it can certainly be said that he played the key role in putting Area 51 on the map. Having said that, one must follow up with the question of exactly where on the map it is.

Lazar was right that Area 51 really exists, and that it is at a secret, previously undisclosed location within the more than 4,680 square miles of desert, mountains and restricted airspace across parts of Clark, Lincoln, and Nye counties that comprise the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). Within this airspace, larger that the state of Connecticut, the U.S. Air Force has long conducted training operations like the well-known Red Flag combat simulation exercises. Also known (and so identified on perimeter signage) as the Nellis Bombing and Gunnery Range, the NTTR is controlled from Nellis AFB, which is located eight miles northeast of Las Vegas. Through the years, the NTTR has grown—and continues to grow—through the acquisition of adjacent public land formerly administered by the Department of the Interior. It also surrounds, on three sides, another off-limits world: the 1,360 square miles of the Department of Energy’s Nevada National Security Site (N2S2). Previously known (and referred to in this book) as the Nevada Test Site (NTS), this is where nuclear weapons were tested for more than four decades.
It has been well known for many years that the U.S. Air Force, as well as the CIA, conducted flight-test programs for secret airplanes at an air fi eld at Groom Lake, a dry lakebed within the NTTR that is roughly 84 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The fact that it went for so long without official acknowledgement lent an aura of mystery to the open secret. As late as 1984, Aviation Week & Space Technology, the industry journal that has a reputation for the best inside information about the aviation world, mistakenly referred to Groom Lake as “Broom” Lake.
Through the Cold War, the U.S. Air Force gradually imposed more restrictions on the airspace over the entire range, and by the 1960s, even air force pilots were being warned not to enter the 600 square miles above and around Groom Lake. To air traffic controllers and air force personnel, the mysterious place soon came to be known informally as “Dreamland.” Federal Aviation Administration charts place Groom Lake within a swath of restricted airspace called R-4808N.
In an August 13, 1984, article in Aviation Week, it was referred to furtively as “the north secret test range of Nellis Air Force Range.” At that time, as the magazine reported, the U.S. Air Force had just closed 90,000 acres of public land in the Groom Mountains contiguous to the eastern boundary of “the north secret test range” without fi ling an environmental impact statement. John O. Rittenhouse, deputy for installations management to the deputy assistant secretary of the air force for installations, environment, and safety, told the public lands and national parks subcommittee of the House of Representatives Interior and Insular Affairs that top-level Reagan administration officials made the decision to close the range to public access for “national security reasons.”
Aviation Week added that Rittenhouse had explained that the area was to be used “only as a buffer and not for . . . ‘environmentally significant activities.’”
In other words, it was attached to the range to keep out prying eyes who might be tempted to turn their binoculars upon the secret world of the air field at Groom Lake.
Had this strange thing been encountered in the mid-1980s, “otherworldly” would have been among the tamest adjectives used. Around the time that Bob Lazar was telling about the alien spaceships at Area 51, the Lockheed F-117A was operating secretly overhead. Lockheed

In the 1950s, long before it had taken on its cloak of extraterrestrial mystery, the air field was known as the Watertown landing strip—more than a bit fanciful, given that it was located on Groom’s lakebed, which is almost perpetually bone dry. Later in that decade, the foundation for later conspiracy theories was laid when Watertown became a rookery for CIA spyplanes, a secret base where they could rest between overseas deployments. These operations are discussed in detail in the CIA’s official history of the Aquatone and Oxcart spyplane programs, written by Gregory Pedlow and Donald Welzenbach and published in 1992. Copies of this report, albeit in redacted form, have been widely circulated among aerospace historians since the turn of the century.
Throughout the past few decades, most people in the aerospace world have referred to the air field complex as “Groom Lake,” just as those in the pop culture world have called it “Area 51.”
Though the Groom Lake complex was known to exist, and Dreamland well known as restricted airspace, inquiries to any government agency—military or civilian—always elicited the uniform response that there was no such place. You might as well be asking a stranger for directions to the Emerald City of Oz.
One of the strangest aspects of the CIA and air force denial of their “Emerald City” was their reticence to acknowledge that they had used the term “Area 51” themselves. One of the few potentially real official mentions came in a May 1967 memo appearing to be from Director of Central Intelligence Richard Helms. This document, in which aircraft deployments from “Area 51” are discussed, has been in circulation for a number of years, but it has not been authenticated.
The first official acknowledgement that the place was officially called Area 51 came on June 25, 2013, with the release of a slightly less redacted version of the 1992 Pedlow and Welzenbach report. In it, we now see that the authors refer to the Groom Lake base as “Area 51” on sixteen pages, although the index shows that at least three additional references to Area 51 remained redacted.
It turns out that Pedlow and Welzenbach had also officially put Area 51 on the map at about the same time that Bob Lazar was doing so unofficially. In the 2013 release, a previously redacted map places Area 51 within Area R-4808N as seen in the FAA map on page seven in this book, and within the red box at the center of our map on page eight.
Why did the CIA redact the casual references to Area 51 by Pedlow and Welzenbach when their very detailed report was first released many years ago? We don’t know, and perhaps we never will. This only serves to add to the mystery surrounding Area 51, but perhaps this was not unintentional. By allowing the term to be the sole property of the UFO speculators for a quarter of a century, the CIA and the air force may have hoped for a diversion of serious scrutiny.
However, despite the redactions of the term in the 1992 report, it was in this same time frame that Area 51 was becoming the focus of a great deal of attention and speculation, some of it serious, much of it on the strange side. In the 1980s, and especially in the 1990s after Bob Lazar’s stories became part of extraterrestrial folklore, a growing number of people began bringing their binoculars to the desert, where the well-guarded perimeter of “Area 51” only gave rise to suspicions that the conspiracy theories bore at least a modicum of substance.
Both extraterrestrial believers and the merely curious came to visit, hoping to catch a glimpse of mysterious lights in the sky and to marvel at the mysterious “black mailbox,” where it was once theorized that the extraterrestrials and/or the keepers of those extraterrestrials picked up their mail. Painted white since the late 1990s, the mailbox actually belongs to rancher Steve Medlin.
In 1996, as the interest in Area 51 promised to lure even more tourists to this remote corner of the state, the state of Nevada even went so far as to designate its State Highway 375 (formerly State Highway 25) as the “Extraterrestrial Highway.”
As the initial excitement about the extraterrestrial theory faded, those who had come to drive this highway discovered that there were strange, unidentifiable lights in the sky. They were literally seeing flying objects that they could not identify! There really were UFOs in the skies over Area 51, but they were not of another world; they were from ours.
9780760344262And so it was that the “black airplane” cult grew up upon ground fertilized by theories of the unexplained that had their origins among those who have longed for the extraterrestrials to be real.
The black airplanes, though, are real, and this is their story—or at least as much of it as we can tell.

Why Are We Making Robots When We Could Be Breeding Super People?

sacredsigilservitor1The thing about magick that’s difficult to explain to the uninitiated is that you absolutely have to do it to understand it entirely. You can’t just read about it in books. Supposedly “coincidental” events start piling on top of each other in such a way that you can’t deny the interconnected nature of consciousness anymore. The ideas of dead matter and cold randomness start to appear increasingly primitive. You try to buy into them because that’s what you’ve been taught since birth but the hive mind keeps throwing wrenches into that whole design from the inside. Eventually you learn to ride the strange and start looking for the plot and how you fit into it rather than denying that there is one a priori. I try to write about this connective sensation as much as I can(more on Facebook than here, friend me), and last weekend was one of those odd examples of the universe tapping into my private thoughtspace and playing tag. Ever since I started writing for Disinfo I’ve been meaning to write a brief piece on just how mind blowingly controversial the topic of genetics is, and I was finally going to get around to tossing that up this week so it was bouncing around my head on a subconscious level. Then as my new music project finished debuting our first Occult film live last Saturday (will be out on the internets next week) I noticed there were a few stray drink tickets we hadn’t used and went out to the bar to cash one in. As I was standing there waiting for them to replenish the Ranier, I looked up at the TV and caught this particular Chris Rock routine, through closed captioning which made it extra surreal. If I would have ordered any other drink I wouldn’t have caught it.
Huh, yeah, they did in fact selectively breed slaves for specific abilities like strength to create super slaves didn’t they and that is part of the reason I now watch the NBA like a crack head isn’t it? I mean, I’d always assumed that was the case but you know, I guess I really never thought about it much….which is exactly how the established power structure wants it. This shit is just not discussed, in fact, when I brought it up to my wife the next day while watching hoops she got super creeped out and admitted she had never ever considered this rather sordid reality. She has two freaking Masters degrees. They don’t teach you this kind of thing in school. Again, I always just assumed that’s what went down and because of that spent a bit of time researching it online to see if I could confirm Mr. Rock’s assertion (and my assumption). Yep, and you know what else? In doing so I also confirmed that as far as controversy goes, this topic is fucking off the scales. Google it yourself. Insanely hard to find any sort of straight answers and all the sites that come up are like small time discussion boards. Buuuut, just on Wikipedia (not trustworthy at all) you can pretty quickly glean that yeah, totally happened. Even they can’t deny it, and man, kids, you know you can’t just do research on the internets right? It was tough to find a fuck thing about the selective breeding of slaves and that info’s gotta be out there. As far as I could tell Thomas Jefferson wrote extensively on the topic himself but I was too lazy to scour the PDF. Bananas.
Hey, I learned something new about black history during black history month and now I’m moving on because I’m white and I probably shouldn’t be talking about this. In fact, why am I talking about genetics in the first place? Well, it all conveniently ties directly back into that sex magick shit I’m continually ranting about. The thing about going all in with sex magick is that it makes you first start confronting your culturally implanted weirdness with sexuality and we all have it. The Occult involves the study of that which is hidden and we typically hide our sex lives from pretty much everyone unless we’re porn stars. Funny thing about that, sex is actually where we all come from in the first place. It’s the primary creative force in the universe and we almost never conceptualize it in that manner. As a matter of fact, thinking about the intentional manipulation of human genetics isn’t something we look to as the potential next frontier for technological exploration at this point in history at all. In fact, it’s a concept that’s still looked upon with absolute terror and revulsion. This stuff has to be done at random. It just has to. It’s God’s plan.
Well, about that plan, as it works out the people with the least resources just so happen to have the most kids a lot of the time. The intro to Idiocracy isn’t that far off the mark. Go research it yourself if you don’t believe me, they track this sort of thing. That’s a hell of a plan God. No, seriously, we’re intentionally writing a genetic tragi-comedy with our DNA, and we’re doing this primarily because of incredibly outdated ideas about spirituality, sexuality, and how those things are tied together. And let us not forget, also because of a seemingly timeless cycle of calculated exploitation by the ruling class. It’s how rich people get richer. Gotta keep churning out those wage slaves if we can’t have actual slaves. But why exactly?
Another strange aspect of a good sex magick practice is that it often leads to internal contact encounters with what can be best described as extra dimensional forms of intelligence. When the internet first hit way back in the day, two of the most popular subjects that rose to initial prominence were porn and shit about UFO’s and aliens. Those were the Occult topics lurking in our subconscious minds that had to be expurgated through electronic telepathy. Ruminate on that for a sec. Now, if you bothered to read up on any of this UFO weirdness, you probably noticed that the implication has always had to do with the intelligent manipulation of genetics behind the scenes of human reality. There have been reports of this kind of shit ever since there’s been us. I can say it over and over. Alien phenomenon seems to be a part of ourselves compelling us to study psi phenomenon and genetics rather than killbots and computers. It’s further compelling because those are THE EXACT THINGS that scare us the most. I almost wonder if we were a shamanic culture whether or not we’d be visited by technologically savvy materialists in the outer reaches of our imaginations to help push us in that direction.
Now, I’m not someone who really has a choice in contemplating genetics because I’m just such an anomaly. My mom is functionally crazy and my dad is a successful physician who was the valedictorian of his medical school (before you get all, oh, Thad’s a spoiled rich kid, keep in mind that my parents got divorced when I was 5 and my dad remarried the greediest woman in the universe thusly ensuring he never game me dick. Seriously, didn’t even pay for my college). So what do you get when you combine the crazy with the hyper rational? Well, you get someone like me who is half batshit and half ridiculously grounded. Now, since my mom’s technically sane (trust me, this is a technicality) I can’t say I necessarily thought about this much until she had a kid with another father and he ended up being about as far out schizophrenic as people can get. Obviously, the crazy gene is in my lineage and what’s particularly fascinating about this is that it’s where my creativity comes from. I wasn’t raised in an artistic household. Quite the opposite. My parents encouraged me not to pursue music quite specifically.
And that’s where it gets even deeper. You know why my parents on my dad’s side didn’t encourage me to pursue rock music? Well, it was partially because I have an uncle who was a professional cover band musician who also happens to be a raging alcoholic. My step mom’s a psychologist. She knows these things are genetic. It’s common fucking knowledge. Remember earlier in the article when I mentioned seeing that Chris Rock segment while grabbing a beer? Yep, first show I’ve played I think ever where I didn’t drink at all. Just grabbed a beer while I was loading out because we had some spare drink tickets and I was hungry because it was 1 in the morning. I’ve actually been intentionally detaching drinking with playing music, because my subconscious mind has been quite brutally telling me what a danger to my health my years of heavy drinking were. Not something I was grasping consciously and I cut out like 70% of my boozing 2 years ago because of all that but I still struggle with it to a certain extent. These extra dimensional weirdos have mentioned my uncle’s DNA and how that affects me repeatedly in my inner life. One night while I was ganji-i-tating and fantasizing about having a kid with the most creative woman I know to make some sort of super artist I was quickly informed that: “no, that wouldn’t work out, you both have the alcoholic gene.”
Why on earth do we not consider this kind of shit when we’re thinking about having children? My wife’s mom was schizophrenic and it’s sort of unbelievable, but when we tell people we’re not going to have kids because there’s madness on both sides of our lineage, people look at us like we’re nuts, yet it is the single most rational topic of contemplation imaginable. Maybe part of the problem with our world is that we don’t think about the broader consequences of our sex lives at all. Traditional religion wants you to have as many kids as possible. That seems to be the basic thesis of a lot of conservative faiths. Keep churning out the brainless wage slaves. Don’t ask questions. We’ll keep ‘em dumber than rocks with our hyper-corrupt religious educational system and the TV. My wife’s homophobic, anti-abortion, pro-republican, evangelical Christian cousins have now had what, 7 kids in the last 5 years? There might be more. I’ve honestly lost count. Remember when I mentioned the beginning of Idiocracy (which I don’t think is a great movie by the way, good premise, poorly executed)? Exactly what I’m getting at here.
The fact of the matter is, even without splicing genes, just being more selective about how we procreate could in fact radically change our reality for the better. We could make super athletes, super artists, super engineers, super scientists, super psychics etc. Limitless potentiality. It’s maybe part of the reason I spend half my leisure time obsessing about sports and before idiot trolls play the race card let me point out that there ain’t no psychic history month. You know where the term witch hunt comes from? Yeah, I’m white and grew up in the suburbs but don’t tell me I don’t understand discrimination.
I don’t even talk about what goes on in my life with my own family very often because they don’t understand it and spend 90% of my time acting like I’m normal when I’m decidedly not. I’ll let you know when the next Occult pride parade goes down in my city. People of my ilk get thrown in mental institutions never to be heard from again, so go ahead, call me crazy motherfucker. You might not want to fuck with the dude who’s tinkering with the very tools by which reality is created behind the scenes, and no, people like me didn’t happen by accident. In one quite profound visionary state years back I was told quite pointedly that: “the things we show you would drive most people insane, but they don’t drive you crazy. That’s what’s significant about you.” As far as I can tell by what was shown to me in that very vision, supposedly crazy people are an ongoing attempt by the gods to create super mystics capable of existing in a multitude of dimensions simultaneously. There will be more and more of us popping up here as time goes by, and eventually as the philosophy of consumerism starts to crumble beneath our fingers society will have to start listening to what we have to say or we’ll all fail collectively. There’s not going to be much of a choice moving forward. We’ve entered a new Aeon my friends. Your murderous robots are not going to save you from your own spiritual ignorance and your concept of a technological singularity is an absolute fucking joke. Trust me, the other side isn’t laughing with you with all that nonsense, they’re laughing at you. Downloading your soul into a computer. Please.

Is ADHD a Mental Health Crisis, or a Cultural One?

Children in a classroomKate Lunau looks at the reasons behind the rapid rise in ADHD diagnosis rates forMacLeans:
Any visitor to North Carolina and California will know that the two states have their differences. The former is a typically “red state”; California is staunchly “blue.” Each has certain geographic, ethnic and cultural peculiarities, different demographic makeup, family income levels, and more. Yet perhaps the most surprising divide, one many wouldn’t expect, is that North Carolina appears to be a hotbed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD—especially when compared to California. A child who lived in North Carolina instead of California in 2007, according to U.S. academics Stephen Hinshaw and Richard Scheffler, was 2½ times more likely to be diagnosed.
In their forthcoming book The ADHD Explosion, Hinshaw and Scheffler—a psychologist and health economist, respectively, at the University of California at Berkeley—examine the causes behind the startling and rapid rise in diagnosis rates of ADHD, a neurobehavioural disorder that has somehow become epidemic. In the U.S., more than one in 10 kids has been diagnosed; more than 3.5 million are taking drugs to curb symptoms, from lack of focus to hyperactivity. While ADHD typically hits middle-class boys the hardest, rates among other groups are steadily rising, including girls, adults and minorities. Kids are being tested and diagnosed as young as preschool. In North Carolina, as many as 30 per cent of teenage boys are diagnosed. Scheffler says, “It’s getting scary.”
According to psychologist Enrico Gnaulati, who is based in Pasadena, Calif., ADHD is now “as prevalent as the common cold.” Various factors seem to be driving up the numbers, factors that extend from home to school to the doctor’s office and beyond. “So many kids have trouble these days,” says long-time ADHD researcher L. Alan Sroufe, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. “I doubt it’s a change in our genetic pool. Something else is going on.”
A closer look at the case of North Carolina and California may be instructive. According to Hinshaw and Scheffler, North Carolinian kids between the ages of four and 17 had an ADHD diagnosis rate of 16 per cent in 2007. In California, it was just over six per cent. Kids with a diagnosis in North Carolina also faced a 50 per cent higher probability they’d get medication. After exhaustively exploring demographics, health care policies, cultural values and other possible factors, they landed on school policy as what Scheffler calls “the closest thing to a silver bullet.”…

Western Spy Agencies Infiltrating, Warping World of Online Activism

abc_edward_snowden_2_jt_130609_msJon Queally writes at Common Dreams:

According to newly published documents, Western spy agencies like the GCHQ and NSA have developed sophisticated online operations in which covert agents infiltrate online communities, networks and forums in order to “manipulate, deceive”—even destroy the reputations of—targeted individuals and groups even if those people have not be charged, or necessarily accused, of a crime.
Building on his previous reporting about so-called “dirty tricks” used by GCHQ to ensare, trap, and discredit online hacktivists and other digital networks, journalist Glenn Greenwald late Monday published a new series of internal agency slides—leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden—which show how a special unit, called JTRIG (Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group), has attempted “to control, infiltrate, manipulate, and warp online discourse” for its own ends. In so doing, writes Greenwald, these operations are disrupting “the integrity of the internet itself.”
Using sophisticated psychological templates, the slides show how the intelligence service believes it can use subversion to disrupt online networks by using various tactics, of which Greenwald descibes two as key: “(1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable.”
In just one example, a slide titled “Disruption” offers a playbook for some of the tactics used to discredit a target. Those possible tactics include: infiltration, false flag, false rescue, and sting operations.
Though previous reporting has shown much of this online subterfuge has been used to target political hacktivist groups like Anonymous or online criminal networks, Greenwald hints that the targets of these online psy-op campaigns may also include other kinds of forums or networks.
